Reading (listening included in reading):

  • Composing Electronic Music by Curtis Roads (New York: Oxford University Press, 2015)

    • Chapter 1 - The Electronic Medium [listen to all examples]

    • Chapter 2 - Aesthetic Foundations [listen to all examples]

  • Bring to class one important idea from each chapter and discuss why it is an important idea from the chapter. Pay special attention to the following ideas:

    • what these chapters mean when they describe building materials (fiberglass)

    • acousmatic

    • commonalities between electronic and traditional music

    • economy of selection

Recording:

  • the purpose of this is so we have original material to use next time ... and to get more practice recording samples well for your projects!

    • note: you'll just show me your samples during class - no need to email me

  • Use the best software and hardware you have access to

  • Record at least 10 samples that are short (a second or few)

  • Record at least 5 samples that are exactly 60 seconds each (after editing)

  • edit all samples to not click (fade in and fade out the beginning and end so all samples begin on a zero crossing)

  • normalize all samples to -1dB
