3. Digital Story

Tell a story supported by sound effects and music.

Project Requirements

  • length = 2min in total length (serisously, the file must be literally 120seconds in length ... right click on the timeline in BandLab to change to "minutes and seconds")

  • software = BandLab for the entire process ( https://www.bandlab.com )

  • what = all material must *not* be protected by copyright by anyone other than yourself (use CC0 sounds from freesound.org

  • where to turn in = add to your class projects portfolio website by getting the embed code from BandLab

Instructions

  • Add all of the following to create a subversive digital story that includes sound effects and music (check out Radiolab if you haven't heard any good stories or podcasts that include sound effects and supporting music)

    1. dialogue

      • you must use an analog microphone, an audio interface with preamp, and a computer to record your speaking so do one of the following:

      • you may need to add proper EQ for your voice (there are *many* articles online about how EQs work ... here's one)

      • if you get too quiet and too loud with your dialogue, you will need to add a compressor to your voice so people don't need to keep adjusting the volume while listening to your digital story (there are *many* articles online about how compressors work ... here's one)

    2. virtual instrument (synth) that records/plays back to a MIDI track

      • note how MIDI tracks [note blocks] differ from audio tracks [waveform]

      • you must add automation of some parameter (at least volume)

    3. at least five *different* royalty-free samples (sounds) from freesound.org or other website(s)

      • note the best way to filter down to royalty-free samples on sites such as freesound.org (licenses = Creative Commons 0)

      • you must add at least one plugin ("FX Effect") and automate one of the settings for one of your samples
